It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. ![]() and an old nightmare.Įeny, meeny, miny, moe. I haven't given up on Baldacci but this one's a bust.Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat. I mean, the Nation's Capital, the Grand Canyon and a train ride between them! If you haven't been either place, this story doesn't paint much of a setting for you. And with such great settings, I'd have hoped for better descriptions. The result is less thrill ride and more Mr. I'm all for a female lead, but for the love of your readers, give her some decent dialog! The story.in the effort to weave a complex tale, he over-explains character backstories and plot lines then resorts to silly twists to tie them together. ![]() I can't tell if Baldacci was "phoning this one in" or if he just can't do three-dimensional female characters. His stories can be a bit fantastic and stretch the limits of belief, but he does such a good job with setting and characters and dialog that it's a fun ride and always entertaining. He's my go-to for good beach, travel, bad weather reads. I can't wait to see what happened to Mercy, and if Baldacci is planning a sequel, for us to know the story of Atlee's long lost sister!īaldacci is one of my favs. Her situation seems to be what our situation could someday be! Yes, this is an enjoyable read with a new superstar lead female protagonist and without spoiling the message Baldacci intended (and this is typical of Memory Man and the Fallen), get comfy and hold onto your seat! You're in for a worthwhile epic adventure and in the end, what Baldacci imagines seems real! Given our current issues, Baldacci spins a tale that could be bringing a New light on just how far potential corruption can reach. The brilliant main scenario Baldacci illuminates involving Atlee stirs up the bigger questions, and her role in all of this, in the final outcome, brings to light the Irony of the situation. The complex problem Atlee deftly handles as Special Investigator for the FBI (though sometimes at key moments she acts on her own), but for the "Greater Good". Where does the main event unfold? Right here at home in the American Southwest I love that Baldacci kept the framed story right here in the good 'ole USA. Ītlee Pine, Special Investigator, is Invincible!īaldacci has created an imaginative thriller in all its aspects, especially the characters! Atlee Pine or should I say "Atlas" because she bears a heavy "emotional" load on her shoulders throughout this thrilling adventure. Note: This is the abridged version of Long Road to Mercy. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it.
